50 cents a bag

Well, he was moody and irritable leaving the house, but cheered up when he got to the restaurant.  He ordered a beer, they brought that and some chips.

In the meantime, I couldn't decide between the fajita taco and the bacon and egg taco.  I asked the owner (who waited our table) and he said I could get both.  So I did that.  I also ordered a fajita burrito to eat for dinner (got it to-go).

Ron was ever mindful of the bathroom issue.  They do not have a wheelchair accessible bathroom.  It is an old building and would be prohibitive to remodel.  So he wanted to be careful what he ate.

He worked on the chips and beer for a while.  I talked about how much I was going to enjoy my food, this place puts huge pieces of bacon in the breakfast taco, and a lot of it.  Very reasonable prices, too.

Ron ordered a bacon and egg taco to go.  My food arrived.  I ate one, took my pills, put a little salt, and ate it too.  Lastly I ate the fajita taco.  They have an open kitchen, I went and thanked the cooks in Spanish.  They laughed at my terrible accent.

They brought out my burrito, and Ron's taco (to-go) while I ate.

After I finished, I paid.  Paratransit was going to leave us there "Too long" so I had suggested to Ron he cancel the trip home, call Arturo and set up and appointment to be picked up.

Ron was moaning about having to wait another 15 minutes when I saw a familiar cab pull into the lot.  I told Ron and we left.  Ron has a lot of trouble getting into vehicles lately.  I wish he would consent to some sort of physical therapy.  Or someone could park a car in our driveway, and he could practice getting in/out for 10 minutes a day.  As it is I'm getting pretty good at shoving his butt.

We got home (it had stopped raining).  I got him in the house.  Baby Girl wanted to go in the garage so I let her, we weren't going out again.  The door was shut to the outside, that's all that mattered, but she can smell the cracks and get some excitement.

I put the food in the fridge.  Ron drank some vodka.  I got on the computer.

It's trash day.  I really filled up that can and I was worried it was too much.  The company has been known to refuse cans if they are overfilled.  It made sense to me they might decline an overly heavy can.

But it must have been nothing to them.  They had that done in no time.  They don't come at a set time like the other guys so it is hard to plan, but I would love to give them some treats/gatorade.  I will have to figure that out.

I put the can back in our driveway.  Ron decided to go work on the sales tax.  After, count it with me, one drink before he left the house, one drink at the restaurant, one drink when he got home.  I am going to stay up until he finishes, and then take a nap.

Tomorrow we have to get up at probably - let me look - 2 AM because the pickup will be around 4.

After I get up from my nap, I will work on clearing out some cabinets.  I only have a little bit of counter space, the microwave (has to be down on the counter so Ron can use it), and dish drainer take up Ron's side of the kitchen.  My side I have my electric teapot, tea, powdered drink mix, canned goods, etc.  I need to get most of that into cabinets and then I'll have counter space to actually do food prep and cooking.

I plan to make stew this weekend, with carrots and potatoes.  I also want to make some curried potatoes with my leftover raw potatoes.  That should be interesting.

The crock-pot liners were a game changer for me, when a friend told me about them.  Put the bag in the pot, put the food in the bag, cook it, eat it, throw away the bag and the pot is still clean.  If I can avoid scrubbing I'm all for it.  And worth spending the 50 cents a bag.

Maybe getting into cars wouldn’t be bad if he wasn’t impatient and waited for the Paratransit he pays for to come, and he would have an easier time boarding. Plus, save probably what $50 bucks for the cab including the super generous tip?

Read what alcohol does to muscles.
I used to get very angry with my dad for drinking himself into that pathetic weakened state. He couldn't even get off the floor so he called me.

You might want to put Ron on magnesium too

The taco place is $7 away. Doable even with a good tip. It's really getting in/out of any vehicle, including paratransit. The big van has a wheelchair lift that comes down, gets him, goes up again. But the paratransit cab, regular cab, and Jack's truck have all proven problematic for him.

I've got Ron on a decent (Swanson brand) multi with iron, folic acid, b complex, antioxidants. It's "a big pill" - Ron, but it's something he takes every day. I told him it might help him prevent sore mouth. I think it has magnesium in it but not a full rda. He is very resistant to taking any sort of supplement.

About the muscles, it's a perfect storm: back trouble, pain pill, alcohol, inactivity, stroke, surprised he hasn't had trouble sooner. He has fallen a few times (not lately) and has firmly instructed me NOT to freak out, and NOT to help him, to let him lie on the ground until he gets HIMSELF up. I have done as instructed. Driver thought I was a real bitch, too.

I agree with all of this. Those ridiculous tips Heather and Ron give the cab drivers are insane. Plus yes he is always getting impatient for the paratransit pickup and cancelling to take a cab. Heather, have you added up how much the cabs and tips cost you a month, plus the eating out? I think it would be pretty enlightening to both of you. Not to mention the man should be trying to do some type of physical therapy for his legs and not just laying about all day with no movement. People in coma's are worked out more than he is.

You should tell ron if he gives himself an enema with the vodka he will get drunk faster

OH, he works pretty well at work. I have to help him a lot but his top half is pretty active.

I'm not giving him an enema. When he had to have one, about 25 years ago, I gave it to him and stood outside the bathroom with the door closed, reading the directions aloud.

With the cabs, you get what you pay for. Get a cheap reputation and try to get picked up in the freezing rain one night! I don't mind that a bit.

Buying dinner for the paratransit drivers got old, but I don't mind a tip to a cab driver.

It’s fine to tip them when you use their service, but I think the other poster is pointing out that you guys seem to use he cab service a lot vs Paratransit (which you already pay for). So adding up what you spend for an entire month of cab trips including the tips might be eye opening.

It’s good that you want to cook more at home, that will not only be healthier but save money on cab fare and money in a restaurant 2x a day

So far this month it was home from the dentist, home from work twice, $7 trip home from Taqueria, and home from the bank once. That is well less than a car payment or gas for a month, so I'm OK with that.

If we eat out, it's only once a day.

And I am trying to eat better. My health issue has got me thinking how utterly f*cked we'd be if I go down.

$7 trip home from Taqueria and how much did you tip? It is crazy to eat out as much as you both do. Not to mention the tips to the server too. And yes you sometimes eat fastfood but most of the time it is going to a place where you have to tip. You keep avoiding tallying up the total cost for cabs and tips and eating out. Sounds like yo don't want to know how much you are wasting every month on that.

I have really stopped going out to sit down restaurants. You saw Ron's behavior at some of them, it just showed me it's bad to take him. So it has been fast food and the "family friendly" taqueria of late.

Ron really has nothing to do except read talking books, watch TV, and eat.

I have been cooking more. Last night's lentils digested well with no headache or stomach upset.

Ron had made a trip to go to a bbq place today but has instead opted for a drive through later.

How much will it cost to just go thru the drive through with the cab and tip? Some of those fast food places deliver now using grub hub or whatever it’s called. Seems like the cheaper option.

I’ll help with the math
Let’s say you used a cab twice a week, totaling 30$ for the day including tip. For the month that’s $240 (easily a car lease payment)
Let’s say you go out to eat 3x a week to a mediocre restaurant with a total bill including the tip of $25. That’s $300 a month
You are at $540 a month for cabs and eating out on this estimate.

The place we're going to, today, is the first sit down restaurant in weeks. It is cafeteria style with a tip jar at the register.

Cab home, with waiting in the drive through, was $20. Most of our cab rides are about $20.

To and from the restaurant today (Ron wanted drive through tacos, which he got), we will be using "tickets" for paratransit. Only cost to us is $5 for the tickets. I may need to have Chuck run me by the store to get more tickets, on Sunday.

Considering his birthday is coming up, and he needs to eat more, I don't mind going.

"Cab home, with waiting in the drive through, was $20. Most of our cab rides are about $20. " So you are tipping $13.00 on a $7.00 fare that is way too much money when you factor in the driving distance. That is over 100% in the tip alone. No wonder the cab drivers like you (more like take advantage of you). The person above who calculated your trips and the cost per month that is just crazy but even crazier I think it is a lot more than what they calculated. Probably 2 -3 times that amount. Why won't you add it up?

I honestly don't know what Ron tipped at the taco place but the cab driver came for us today so it must have been OK.

The worst thing a cab can do to me is not come, or say they will, and don't. One time I was left waiting for two and a half hours on a cab and it still never came. I ended up calling Chuck.

I will commit to adding up cab fares for February, but as of now I don't know how much it is. Ron pays for it. I am with Ron, I am willing to pay more for reliable, on-demand, convenience. We have always taken care of cab drivers.

One time, about 20 years ago, Ron had pneumonia and coughing up blood. The hospital was about a mile away. He refused to take a cab to the hospital (the bus didn't go), fearing he would get the driver sick, instead walking both ways (home, with his antibiotics). I can understand that.

I can't tell if you are caring or criticizing
