Don't rule out a hospital bed. AND A NEW MATTRESS (infection control) and covering the old one with plastic is not adequate for infection control, smell or general sanitation. I would condemn the room for that alone.
Yes a new mattress with a plastic cover on it. I doubt you scrubbed the mattress with bleach and let it dry adequately before he got back into bed. The man hardly eats so if he has the runs he may have c.diff or some other infection.
