I agree it's related to drinking. About the back, separate issue. He already had a really bad back even before the accident. Arthritis and disc disease for sure, per his last x-ray. Plus whatever they did during the surgery seems to have made things worse.
This should help the nerve disease he has pretty much everywhere. He cannot stand a lot of physical contact as a result. Ongoing, chronic, pain, everywhere - that may get better but we'll have to see.
