Antibiotic rant

"I'm on antibiotics" everyone's telling me.  It's enough to make an infectious diseases specialist scream and pull out their hair.

I caught a virus, which affected my respiratory tract, causing extreme coughing and fatigue.  Guess what?  Antibiotics ain't helping!  It's a virus.  It's all over Houston, though, and half the city got antibiotics from their doctor.

Antibiotics don't work on virus illnesses.  They can only eliminate a secondary infection that might set in (say, in a smoker or someone with asthma).  Antibiotics only work AFTER they have developed the secondary illness.

Study after study proves, it is worthless and dangerous to give antibiotics to people suffering from viral illness.  Ron's lying in the next room, suffering from neuropathy, because he was given antibiotics for something that could have been treated at home.  He didn't want that, he wanted antibiotics, so that's what he got - and the toxic allergic reaction that caused permanent neuropathy.

I wish all the people on antibiotics could hear him groaning in pain before they took their next dose.

I've only taken antibiotics for a severe cat bite (not my cat), and bladder infections, proper uses for what can be a dangerous drug.

Besides, I already take 7 prescriptions and 8 vitamins every day anyway.  I take enough pills!

You're right that antibiotics don't help viral infections, and that it can be harmful to over prescribe.
My husband's cough, though, ended up being an upper respiratory infection that required antibiotics- and he's not a smoker or immune compromised. It can be important to get checked out and ensure that there is no infection present if the illness lingers for over a week.

You are right about antibiotics but a flu shot is a low risk TON of protection from a deadly disease

Anonymous, I'd agree if my sister didn't come this close to needing a pacemaker, 12 hours after a flu shot. She ended up having heart problems for about a week, passing out at times, very abnormal readings, in Coronary ICU. Finally discharged with a halter monitor for a month, and very close to pacemaker implantation before it all resolved.

I am already at huge risk for heart disease. My mother died of a heart attack due to hypertansion, my paternal grandfather died at 37 of complications of heart disease... my Dad had a triple bypass back ini 1997. If something's going to kill me, probably my heart.

Not to mention my brother ended up in the hospital for 6 weeks after HIS last flu shot.

I'm not interested. I have enough health problems without "shooting up"!

Jillian, I'd love to get Ron to the doctor, his neuropathy has been really bad lately, but he won't go for that, much less the cough.

I always heard that heart patients should get the flu shot., as getting the flu is very risky to someone with a heart condition. However, if you have a chance of being allergic to it (typically if you have an allergy to chicken or eggs, as that's where the virus is grown.), then yes, not a good idea. Such reactions are rare but possible.

I hear you about Ron...it's tough to get some people in to a doctor. Having bipolar disorder cured me of that, there was a time I was in there every week.
